Leviathan and Polar both evoke the overwhelming power of nature over man, institutions, and the fragility of these systems. In both, a large wave encompasses the sculpture, overtaking the image of a ship in Polar, and a church in Leviathan. The steeple emerges from the wave, witnessed by an onlooking whale. The artist states of this work, thinking of the vastness of the ocean, “if God existed the whale would know.”
