Think of your experience with elephants and their environments. Likely, your visual experience from has come from nature documentaries, possibly a visit to the zoo, or imagery in books. In Iowa, those with experience with the real thing is likely a rare event. The artist is contemplating the imagery of colonialism and the burden it places through the cornice piece and branch, giving visual weight and tension to the image. Ephemeral in process but not in result, patina is applied to the to the steel surface, creating a visual that looks like it could be wiped away, however it is etched into the surface.
