In Apex, the manipulated patina on steel is used to create a dramatic cut mark that shows the process of “shark finning.” The cut mark shines a bright bronze, drawing the viewer’s eye to the cruel act. Every year, an estimated 100 million sharks are killed in this manner, removing only the most valuable piece of meat, the fin, and sending the shark back into the ocean to sink to its death. The turbulent horizon line of waves are also created with this process of applying patina and abrading it back to the original surface.
