John Henry created Ice Blue in 2002 as a model in preparation for a larger sculpture. While this sculptural model is still quite large at 11 feet tall, the larger artwork which evolved from it is over 50 feet tall. The original paint color was created by the artist mixing two pre-purchased colors together, which was recreated as closely as possible by the Public Art Incubator. The conservation of the surface of Ice Blue was completed during the remodel and addition to the Gerdin Business Building, allowing for a newly painted sculpture to be placed at the southeastern entryway to the building.
