THEME: Perceptions of Beauty and the Self

In this grouping of paintings, they all gaze directly at the viewer, with the face duplicated numerous times in all of the paintings. Each of the subjects appears to be women, with negative projections of the figure, or the Classical sculpture featured in the background.

With the depiction of the Classical female form in the background of the far right painting, why might the choice have been made to portray women with these color negative projections? Unconscious understandings of the standards of beauty have been created by various cultural influences. How do these standards affect the perceptions of one’s self?
