Tom Stancliffe worked with artist Susan Selene Fiene to fabricate Air Spiral located outside the Student Services Building. A design proposal from an artist often indicates chosen materials and a final design, but artists often need assistance from fabrication experts in materials such as metal to ensure the resulting sculpture will be long lasting and sturdy. The material of this large metal sculpture fit within Stancliffe’s years of expertise, allowing him to provide guidance for the final materials and fabrication techniques which was then fabricated in collaboration with the artist. In maintenance documents for the installation, Stancliffe cites the goal of using materials that are low maintenance, and will hold up well in a public, outdoor environment. The expertise of a metals fabricator was necessary when creating this work of art as the original design would structurally not have been sound if materials were used as originally proposed by the artist.
