Concrete Poem, 1985
Acrylic, garment labels on canvas On loan from the artist
In her studio, formerly occupied by a garment manufacturing company, Bart found hundreds of washable fabric instruction labels that she used to create this work. As Bart picked the labels off the floor, they were upside down and indecipherable, yet retained a sense of importance. This found language struck Bart as a poem, inspiring her to create a visual poem in homage to women’s work that is in plain sight, but that we still fail to see.
