Dragon: A Novel Agent

By Vince Gotera

The dragon flying over Yggdrasil

is a mishmash of scraps, a basilisk

with a myriad wings, claws, legs, and scales.

On the tree winds a snake, the tempter full

of lies. On either side are two grave risks:

a scorpion with its venomous tail,

a tarantula with fangs, poisonous,

hairy. Such is our life, a potent mix

of dangers from all sides, directions, while

somewhere, a mirage hidden in clouds is

                                   unforeseen, an angel.

     —curtal sonnet
