welded steel, antique trunk, painted wood, bronze

on loan from the artist

Incorporating an antique trunk, this sculpture evokes travel and what is considered invasive in nature. A welded rabbit sits in a trunk, as if ready for a trip, referencing the introduction and rapid destruction of habitat caused from European rabbits introduced into Australian landscapes. Extending outwards from the trunk is a branch, a visual metaphor that appears frequently in Stancliffe’s sculptures. What change is coming from this growth and expansion, whose home is being taken over, or spread by this travel of a species?
